Margins, Orientation & Size
Page Setup: Margins, Orientation & Paper Sizes
Before drafting extensive content, configuring your page geometry ensures that your work prints properly, adheres to corporate standards, and fits international paper stocks.
1. Document Margins
Margins represent the blank border space framing your text. Word offers preset margin configurations on the Layout tab > Margins:
- Normal (Default): 1 inch (2.54 cm) on all 4 sides (Top, Bottom, Left, Right). The universal standard for academic submissions and official correspondence.
- Narrow: 0.5 inches (1.27 cm) on all sides. Maximizes printable canvas area, perfect for single-page resumes, flyers, and dense tabular schedules.
- Moderate: 1 inch Top & Bottom, 0.75 inches Left & Right.
- Wide: 1 inch Top & Bottom, 2 inches Left & Right.
- Mirrored: Configures "Inside" and "Outside" margins for double-sided book binding.
The Gutter Margin
If you plan to bind your printed document in a spiral binder, ring binder, or hardcover book, text near the spine can be obscured.
- Go to Layout > Margins > Custom Margins...
- Set the Gutter margin (e.g. 0.5") and Gutter position (Left or Top). This reserves extra buffer solely for the binding glue or spiral holes without offsetting your visual text alignment!
2. Page Orientation
Navigate to Layout tab > Orientation:
- Portrait (Vertical): Standard $8.5 \times 11\text{ in}$ (Letter) or $210 \times 297\text{ mm}$ (A4). Used for standard reading, novels, resumes, letters, and reports.
- Landscape (Horizontal): Standard $11 \times 8.5\text{ in}$ or $297 \times 210\text{ mm}$. Used for wide data tables, certificates, brochures, and horizontal presentation slides.
3. Paper Sizes
Navigate to Layout tab > Size:
- Letter ($8.5 \times 11\text{ in}$): The official corporate standard across the United States and Canada.
- A4 ($8.27 \times 11.69\text{ in}$ / $210 \times 297\text{ mm}$): The universal international standard across India, Europe, Asia, and the UK.
- Legal ($8.5 \times 14\text{ in}$): Extended length paper used for legal contracts, court filings, and real estate deeds.
