Welcome back! In the previous lesson, you learned that HTML elements belong to two big display families: Block and Inline.
Now, imagine you want to build a modern, beautiful Student Profile Card on your website:
- It needs a white background box with rounded corners.
- Inside the card, you want a student name, their class, and a little green badge that says "Present Today".
- And inside a sentence, you want just one specific word to shine bright in Orange!
None of the basic tags like <p> or <h1> are designed to group a whole card together.
For this, HTML gives us two magical, invisible organizers:

- She puts them neatly inside a Tiffin Box.
- The tiffin box doesn't change the taste of your food. But it holds everything together, keeps it clean, and lets you move the whole meal at once!
In HTML, <div> (Division) is that tiffin box:
- It is a Block-level element.
- By default, it is 100% invisible and has zero styling.
- But it groups headings, paragraphs, buttons, and images into a neat "box" so you can give them a common background color, border, or shadow!
2. The <span> Tag = A Fluorescent Highlighter Pen šļø
When you are studying for your board exams, you don't cut up your science textbook with scissors just to emphasize an important date.
- You simply pick up your yellow or pink highlighter pen.
- You draw a little colored line over just one or two words inside the sentence!
In HTML, <span> is that highlighter pen:
- It is an Inline-level element.
- It does not jump to a new line.
- It wraps around a few words inside a sentence so you can change their color, font size, or weight without disturbing the rest of the paragraph!

The word div stands for Division (because it divides your webpage into neat logical sections).

Without the <div>, the heading, paragraph, and button would just sit floating separately on the page.

The <span> element wraps around a specific piece of text inside an existing block:
