UPI, AEPS, and eWallet Concepts
UPI, AEPS, and eWallet Concepts (डिजिटल भुगतान प्रणाली)
India leads the world in real-time digital payment volume, accounting for nearly 46% of all global digital transactions!
This revolution is powered by indigenous platforms developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI): UPI (Unified Payments Interface) and AEPS (Aadhaar Enabled Payment System).
1. What is UPI? (Unified Payments Interface - यूपीआई)
UPI is an advanced, real-time payment system developed by NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) and regulated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). It was officially launched in April 2016 by Dr. Raghuram Rajan.
Core Features of UPI:
- 1Instant 24x7 Interbank Transfer: Transfer money from your bank to any other bank account instantly (365 days a year, including bank holidays and Sundays!).
- 2Virtual Payment Address (VPA / UPI ID):
- You don't need to share your sensitive bank account number or branch IFSC code!
- You only share your UPI ID (VPA), which looks like an email address:
- Example:
sumit@sbi,mobileNumber@paytm,user@okhdfcbank.
- 1Authentication via UPI PIN:
- Transactions are secured with a private 4-digit or 6-digit numeric UPI PIN that you set during registration.
- Crucial Rule: You enter your UPI PIN ONLY when SENDING / PAYING money. You NEVER enter a UPI PIN to RECEIVE money!
- 1Transaction Limits: Standard UPI transfer limit is typically ₹1,00,000 per day (higher for tax payments, hospitals, and educational institutions).
2. What is AEPS? (Aadhaar Enabled Payment System)
AEPS is a bank-led model developed by NPCI that allows interoperable financial transactions at Micro-ATMs (PoS terminals) using a citizen's Aadhaar authentication.
Why AEPS is Revolutionary for Rural India:
- In remote villages of Uttar Pradesh, citizens don't need to walk 10 kilometers to reach a physical bank branch or ATM.
- A local Banking Correspondent (Bank Mitra / Grahak Seva Kendra) carries a portable smartphone and biometric fingerprint scanner.
- Requirements for AEPS:
- 1The citizen's bank account must be linked with their Aadhaar Number.
- 2The citizen's Bank Name.
- 3Biometric Fingerprint or Iris scan (No ATM card, debit card, or phone number required!).
- Services on AEPS:
- Cash Withdrawal (नकद निकासी)
- Cash Deposit (नकद जमा)
- Balance Enquiry (खाता शेष जांच)
- Mini-Statement (अंतिम 10 लेनदेन)
- Aadhaar to Aadhaar Fund Transfer
3. What is an e-Wallet (Digital Wallet)?
An e-Wallet (Electronic Wallet) is a digital prepaid storage container on your smartphone where you can load money from your bank account or debit card in advance to make fast purchases (e.g. Paytm Wallet, Mobikwik, Amazon Pay Balance).
- Difference from UPI: In UPI, money moves directly from Bank Account to Bank Account. In an e-Wallet, money is stored in an intermediate virtual wallet balance.
