When you turn on your computer and Windows finishes booting, the primary visual workspace that appears on your monitor is called the Desktop.

Mastering desktop navigation, manipulating icons, and managing the Windows Taskbar are foundational skills tested in the CCC practical exam.

1. Anatomy of the Desktop Screen

The Windows desktop consists of three primary visual areas:

   Desktop Background (Wallpaper): The background image or solid color filling the entire screen.

   Desktop Icons: Small visual pictograms representing applications, files, folders, and system tools.

   Taskbar (टास्कबार): The horizontal bar resting at the bottom of the screen (by default).

2. Standard Desktop Icons

Every standard Windows installation contains special System Icons:

• This PC (पहले 'My Computer'):
• Displays all storage disk drives (Local Disk C:, Local Disk D:), DVD drives, and connected USB pen drives.
• Allows you to inspect system hardware properties (Processor type, installed RAM, Windows edition).
• Recycle Bin (रीसायकल बिन):
• The digital trash can where deleted files and folders are temporarily stored.
• If you delete a file by mistake, you can open the Recycle Bin and click Restore to recover it.
• Permanent Delete Shortcut: Pressing Shift + Delete deletes the file permanently from the disk without sending it to the Recycle Bin!
• Network: Displays computers and shared printers connected to your Local Area Network (LAN).
• Control Panel: The central hub for configuring system hardware, mouse settings, display themes, user accounts, and removing software.

3. What is a Shortcut Icon? (शॉर्टकट क्या है?)

A Shortcut is a tiny pointer file (with file extension .lnk) that provides a quick link to a program or file located deep inside subfolders.

• Visual Indicator: A shortcut icon always has a small curved arrow (तीर का निशान) in its bottom-left corner!
• Important Fact: If you delete a shortcut icon from your desktop, the original program is NOT deleted! Only the quick link is removed.
