Based on processing capabilities and architecture, operating systems are classified into:

A. Single-User, Single-Tasking OS

D. Real-Time Operating System (RTOS)

  • Designed for systems where computational response must occur within strict, split-second time deadlines (deadlines). Even a delay of milliseconds can cause catastrophic failure.
  • Examples: Guided missile systems, aircraft autopilot, nuclear reactors, medical pacemakers, automotive airbag sensors.
  • Examples: VxWorks, RTLinux, QNX.

E. Distributed Operating System

  • Manages a collection of independent networked computers, making them appear as a single unified system to users.
