Editorial Typography: Drop Caps & Pull Quotes

In professional magazine, newsletter, and book publishing, an ornate, oversized initial capital letter at the beginning of a chapter draws reader attention into the narrative. In typography, this is called a Drop Cap.

   Click anywhere inside the opening paragraph of your chapter or article.

• Dropped: The oversized letter drops down inside the paragraph, and body lines wrap snugly around its right side.
• In Margin: The oversized letter is pushed out into the left blank margin, leaving the body text starting flush at the normal margin line.

2. Customizing Drop Cap Options

Click Insert > Drop Cap > Drop Cap Options...:

• Font: You can assign an elegant decorative serif or gothic font (e.g. Old English Text MT, Garamond, or Georgia) to the Drop Cap while the rest of the paragraph remains in clean modern Calibri!
• Lines to drop: Controls how many vertical lines tall the initial letter becomes (default is 3 lines; can be set from 1 to 10 lines).
• Distance from text: Configures horizontal breathing room between the drop cap letter and the following body text (e.g. 0.1 in prevents letters like 'W' from colliding with text).

3. Styling Editorial Pull Quotes

A Pull Quote is a memorable sentence excerpted from the article and enlarged in a decorative box to grab scanning readers:

   Go to Insert > Text Box > Built-in Pull Quotes (e.g. Austin Quote, Banded Quote).

   Format the quote in 14pt Italic, set subtle top and bottom border rules, and center it between columns.
