- Trace Precedents (Shortcut: Ctrl + [ ): Draws blue tracer arrows showing which cells feed information into the active formula.
- If a precedent resides on a different worksheet, a black dashed arrow points to a small sheet icon. Double-clicking the dashed line opens the Go To dialog to teleport directly to the external source cell!

When a nested formula returns an unexpected number or error, reading the full equation is confusing. Evaluate Formula acts as a step-by-step code debugger:
- 1Select the cell with the confusing formula.
- 2Click Formulas > Evaluate Formula (or press Alt + M + V).
- 3The dialog displays the formula with the first operation underlined.
- 4Click Evaluate:
- Excel replaces the underlined expression with its intermediate calculated value.
- The next operation is underlined.
