Inline, Internal, and External CSS
Now that you know how CSS rules work, the big question is: Where do we actually write our CSS code? 🤔
In web development, there are 3 standard ways to connect CSS styling to your HTML document:

Imagine your school principal and teachers need to give instructions to students. There are 3 different ways they communicate:

Method 1: Inline CSS (Directly on the Element)
Inline CSS is applied directly to an individual HTML element using the style attribute inside its opening tag.
Syntax:
When to Use Inline CSS:
- For quick testing or temporary debugging when you want to see an immediate change.
- When creating HTML email newsletters (most email clients like Gmail and Outlook prefer inline styles).
Disadvantages:
- No Reusability: If you have 20 paragraphs, you must copy-paste
style="..."on every single paragraph. - Messy Code: It mixes design with content, making HTML cluttered and difficult to read.
- Hard to Maintain: Changing your site color scheme requires editing hundreds of individual tags.
Method 2: Internal CSS (Inside the <head> Tag)
Internal CSS (also called Embedded CSS) is placed inside a <style> element within the <head> section of your HTML document.
Syntax:
When to Use Internal CSS:
- For single-page websites, simple school projects, or standalone landing pages.
- When each page in a project needs a completely unique, one-off design.
Disadvantages:
- Only applies to that one specific HTML file. If you have an
about.htmlandcontact.html, they cannot reuse these styles unless you duplicate the<style>block.
Method 3: External CSS (The Professional Gold Standard ⭐)
In External CSS, you write all your styling rules in a completely separate file with a .css extension (for example, style.css). Then, you connect that file to any HTML page using the <link> tag placed inside the <head> section.
Step 1: Create your CSS file (style.css)
Step 2: Link the CSS file inside your HTML (index.html)
Understanding the <link> Tag Attributes:
rel="stylesheet": Tells the browser that the linked document is a stylesheet.href="style.css": Specifies the path/location of your CSS file.
Why External CSS is the Gold Standard:
- 100% Separation of Concerns: HTML handles structure, CSS handles styling.
- Infinite Reusability: 1 CSS file can style 10, 100, or 10,000 pages across an entire web application.
- Super Fast Browsing: Browsers cache the external CSS file, so subsequent pages load instantly!
