To access government portals, stream classes, and browse websites, your computer or mobile device must establish a physical or wireless link to an ISP (Internet Service Provider).

In India, leading ISPs include Jio, Airtel, BSNL, and Vodafone Idea (Vi).


1. Evolution of Internet Connection Modes

A. Dial-Up Connection (डायल-अप - ऐतिहासिक)

  • The earliest residential connection method used in the 1990s.
  • Converted digital signals into audio tones using an analog telephone line and a Modem (Modulator-Demodulator).
  • Drawback: Extremely slow (maximum speed 56 Kbps). While the internet was connected, the home landline telephone remained engaged!

B. Broadband & DSL (Digital Subscriber Line)

C. FTTH - Fiber to the Home (ऑप्टिकल फाइबर - आधुनिक)

  • Modern high-speed broadband standard (JioFiber, Airtel Xstream, BSNL Bharat Fiber).
  • Transmits data as pulses of Light through ultra-thin strands of glass fibers.
  • Unaffected by electrical interference, rain, or storms. Speeds range from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps (1000 Mbps)!

D. Cellular Mobile Data (3G, 4G LTE, 5G)

  • Connects smartphones wirelessly to cellular radio towers.
  • 4G LTE: Enabled high-definition video streaming across rural India.
